Police Chief Reminds Residents of Winter Weather Parking Restrictions

Winter Parking.jpg
With winter just around the corner, the Fort Madison Police Department would like to remind everyone that trailers, campers, and boats should not be left on the street. Any vehicle, trailer, camper or boat left on the street in excess of 48 hours is prohibited and subject to ticket and or towing. In the event of snow, items such as these parked on the street can hamper snow removal by City crews.

Section 9, Chapter 14 of the City Code addresses snow emergencies and parking issues related to snow events. If the City were to declare a snow emergency, a plan is in place to where on odd numbered days parking is prohibited on the odd numbered side of the street. On an even numbered day, parking is prohibited on the even numbered side of the street. This shall continue until the snow has stopped and City streets have been plowed from curb to curb.

In the event of a major winter storm with high accumulations of snow, ice or sleet, the Public Works Director may prohibit parking on all roads or parts of all roadways within the City in order to expedite road clearing operations. Once the event has been declared to be over and streets have been cleared curb to curb, the parking prohibition can be lifted.

In an incident of a snow emergency, the public will be notified through the City’s website and also media outlets covering the City of Fort Madison.
