Entry Level Firefighter Testing To Be Held

Applicants wishing to test for the position of Fire Fighter must be at least 18 years of age and may be no older than 64.  Applicants must be of good moral character, be able to read and write the English language, may not be a liquor or drug addict, and must possess a valid high school diploma or GED.  These are the minimum qualifications to test for the position of Fire Fighter.  

Qualified persons wishing to test for the position of Fire Fighter, after the completion of the employment application, will be provided
a background check waiver and physical agility test waiver and must return these waivers, and a $15 check to the City Clerk’s Office no later than   May 3, 2019  .  Any applicants returning waivers and checks after this date will not be considered for testing.

Following review of these documents and the background check, an examination for the position of Fire Fighter on the Fort Madison Fire Department will be held on May 18, 2019.  The examination will consist of both written and physical agility tests.  Fifty percent of the applicant’s total score will be calculated from the written test and fifty percent of the applicant’s total score will be calculated from the physical agility test.  In addition, honorably discharged veterans from the military or naval forces of the United States of America as defined in Section 35.1, who are citizens and residents of Iowa, shall have five points added to the veterans grade or score attained in qualifying examinations for appointment to positions and five additional points added to the grade or score if the veterans has a service-connected disability or is receiving compensation, disability benefits or pension under laws administered by the veterans administration.  An honorably discharged veteran who has been awarded the Purple Heart for disabilities incurred in action shall be considered to have a service-connected disability.  However, the points shall be given only upon passing the exam and shall not be the determining factor in passing.

The examination for the position of Fire Fighter shall consist of I.P.M.A. test number  __201-NC__ for the written examination and a physical agility test consisting of an altitude test and the Phoenix Agility test.

Immediately following completion of both the written and agility examinations, the Fort Madison Civil Service Commission shall meet to score the test.  The fifteen applicants receiving the highest total passing scores will be placed on a ranked list and certified to the City Council of the City of Fort Madison for final approval.  All newly created or other vacancies for the position of Fire Fighter, which shall occur before the next examination, shall be filled from this list.  In the event of a tie score for the fifteenth position on the certified list, all applicants receiving fifteenth place scores shall be placed on the list in alphabetical order.  In the event less than fifteen applicants successfully complete the examination, the list to be certified shall contain only the names of those who have passed the examination.  An individual’s test score will be made available to the applicant by the Civil Service Commission immediately following the grading of both the written and physical agility exams.  The Civil Service Commission will also supply the Fort Madison Fire Chief with a list containing each applicant’s test score.

Applicants wishing to test for the position of Fire Fighter on the Fort Madison Fire Department shall not be discriminated against on the basis of height, weight, sex or race in determining the physical or mental ability of the applicant.

At the time of appointment you will be required to be a resident of the State of Iowa and live within ten air miles of the city limits of Fort Madison as stipulated in City Ordinance No. C-330, and must remain within those guidelines throughout employment.

A copy of this notice shall be posted at City Hall.

The Fort Madison Civil Service Commission, in closed session, utilizing only those personnel required to conduct the exam will do all testing and grading.  Final certification of the ranked list of 15 finalists will be taken in open session of the Fort Madison Civil Service Commission and the names contained on this list will be made available to the general public and the media upon request.
